When temperatures climb, it's tempting to crank up the air conditioner—but a few simple adjustments can help keep your home comfortable while using less energy.
One of the easiest ways to lower cooling costs is to adjust your thermostat. Set your thermostat to 78°F when you're home to help reduce energy use. When you're away, raising the temperature a few degrees can help lower your energy bills even more.
For even greater convenience, consider upgrading to an ENERGY STAR® certified smart thermostat. Smart thermostats automatically adjust temperatures to help keep your home comfortable while reducing energy use. Focus on Energy offers savings when you purchase an eligible model through the Online Marketplace, have one installed by a participating Trade Ally contractor, or buy a qualifying thermostat from another retailer and apply for a rebate.
Air conditioners also run more efficiently when they are properly maintained. Check your air filter monthly and replace or clean it as needed, keep leaves and debris away from the outdoor unit, and schedule an annual tune-up to help catch small issues before they become expensive repairs. You can also reduce the workload on your cooling system by closing blinds during the hottest part of the day and using ceiling fans to improve air circulation.
A few simple changes and routine maintenance can go a long way toward improving comfort, lowering energy costs, and helping your cooling system perform at its best all summer long.
