Waterloo – As students start a new school year in Waterloo, they may see their schools in a new light.

The Waterloo School District took on a major lighting project over the summer, upgrading to LED lights and adding occupancy sensors and daylighting controls.

Focus on Energy worked with school officials on the projects and the district is taking advantage of a $42,487 incentive payment from Focus on Energy to help offset the costs of the changes.

Focus on Energy’s Agriculture, Schools, and Government program works with school districts across the state on energy efficiency projects. In Waterloo, the lifecycle energy savings of the three projects is enough to power 387 homes for a year.

The changes will also bring big monetary savings, as the district is projected to save more than $48,000 in energy costs the first year and more than $625,000 over the lifetimes of the projects.

A recent evaluation report found every $1 invested in Focus on Energy programs creates $5.93 in benefits for Wisconsin, including economic benefits, reduced energy costs, and reduced pollution.
