Energy Saving Behaviors

In celebration of National Energy Awareness Month, FOCUS ON ENERGY® and the Wisconsin K-12 Energy Education Program (KEEP) are promoting energy conservation by engaging Wisconsin K-12 schools in the Renew Our Schools initiative. This fall, four schools are participating in a five-week energy-saving competition aimed at reducing energy use through student-led efforts.

Renew Our Schools empowers students with hands-on learning, teaching them how to monitor and lower their school’s energy consumption through strategic energy-saving behaviors. Equipped with tools like energy meters and educational resources, students will track real-time data, identify inefficiencies, and implement actions to reduce energy waste. The program not only cultivates environmental awareness, but also fosters leadership, collaboration, and teamwork, all while helping schools cut down on energy costs.

The Challenge
Reduce Energy Usage

Since Spring 2022, the Renew Our Schools challenge has been a valuable tool for Wisconsin schools, ranging from elementary to high school. Over the course of five competition cycles, forty schools statewide have successfully reduced their energy usage.

"The Renew Our Schools program gives students a unique opportunity to become energy leaders within their schools,” said Heather Feigum, Program Manager at Focus on Energy. “It fosters leadership, teamwork, and a deeper understanding of how small, everyday actions can lead to significant, meaningful change.”
