Energy Efficiency Brings Big Benefits to Multifamily Properties

Appleton Apartment Complex Gets Energy-Saving Boost

Keep your tenants happy and your costs low. If you own or manage a multifamily property, energy-saving improvements like adding insulation and sealing air leaks can make a big difference in terms of comfort, energy costs and maintenance. Improving efficiency also helps reduce turnover rates and adds appeal when attracting new residents.

Blaine Ott manages an apartment complex in Appleton, Wisconsin, and recently worked with FOCUS ON ENERGY® to complete energy-saving updates that are already showing their value. The building was built in the late 1950s and had yet to receive updates to its insulation. After an inspection, Blaine knew there were savings to be had by completing an air sealing and insulation project.

“Focus on Energy’s incentives played a huge part in the project,” he said. “We were able to justify the expense partly through the cash-on-cash return, as well as the increase in value we created in the property.”

Blaine used Focus on Energy Trade Ally contractor Accurate-Airtight Exteriors to scope and complete the insulation and air sealing improvements, and received nearly $3,500 in cash incentives to cover a significant portion of the costs. After only a couple of months, the difference in comfort and energy savings is noticeable and Blaine is finding additional benefits as well.

“The boiler itself is running less often because there’s less load on it. The boiler is original to the property and if we can get more life out of it or less maintenance due to less run time, we will see benefits we didn’t account for in our initial scoping of the payback.”

Focus on Energy cash incentives can cover up to 30% of the cost for multifamily insulation and air sealing. If you’re looking to add comfort and value to your own multifamily property, learn more about our Multifamily Incentives and Resources.
