Five Ways to Celebrate Earth Day Every Day
Earth Day, Every Day

Focus on Saving

There may be only one Earth, but that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate it every day. To help, here are five planet-friendly tips to help you save energy and money at home this Earth Day and beyond.

1 Light the Way
LEDs

Upgrading to LEDs is one of the easiest ways to save energy around the home. Compared to incandescent bulbs, LEDs use at least 75% less energy to produce the same amount of light. They can also last up to 25 times longer, giving you years of reliable brightness before you need to head back to the store for a replacement.

Already made the switch? You can still help the planet — and your budget — by turning off lights when you leave a room. Smart bulbs that connect to your home’s Wi-Fi can even be turned off remotely.

Available in a wide variety of shapes, styles, and colors, LEDs are a bright idea for any home. See for yourself with a free pack from the Focus on Energy® Online Marketplace.

2 Smarten Up
Smart Themostats

Smart thermostats are another simple energy-saving upgrade. By “learning” your daily routine and preferences, they can automatically adjust the temperature for optimal comfort when you’re home and awake — and maximum efficiency when you’re away or asleep.

They can also be controlled remotely via a compatible app, making them a convenient option for on-the-go energy savings. Even better, you can save $50 or more on qualifying models with a Focus on Energy rebate or instant discount.

3 Seal the Deal
Insulation and Air Sealing

According to ENERGY STAR®, properly sealing and insulating your home can greatly boost your year-round comfort and lower your annual energy costs by as much as 10%. Most homes — new and old models alike — can benefit from sealing air leaks and adding insulation to the attic, exterior walls, overhangs, sill boxes, or foundation.

The benefits extend beyond just lower energy costs, too. You can also expect to see a reduction in drafts, pests, allergens, outside noise, and the risk of ice dams. And when installed by a participating Trade Ally contractor, insulation and air sealing improvements can qualify for up to $2,620 in rebates.

4 Feel the Need … for Variable Speed
Variable Speed Pumps

As the name implies, a variable-speed water pump automatically adjusts its speed to only use as much energy as needed to deliver the correct flow rate. Compared to standard single-speed pumps, variable-speed models use around 60% less energy.

If your pool or well pump is over three years old, there’s a good chance it’s single speed. ENERGY STAR estimates that upgrading to a variable-speed pump can save you up to $450 a year in energy costs. If you really want to make a splash, get the savings started before pool season with Focus on Energy rebates up to $320.

5 Get Pumped
Geothermal Air Source Heat Pumps

What better way to celebrate Earth than to partner with it? Geothermal heat pumps rely on the stable temperatures underground to produce cost-effective heating, cooling, and water heating for your whole home. Temperatures remain consistent even just a few feet beneath the surface, allowing geothermal systems to reliably and efficiently exchange heat year-round.

This consistency comes with several benefits. Compared to air-source heat pumps, geothermal systems are quieter and more efficient, require next-to-no maintenance, and can last decades. Naturally, there are rebates too: Work with a participating Trade Ally contractor to install yours and save up to $1,000.
