The Bayfield County/Focus on Energy “Save to Give” program concluded early in March with checks for more than $5,500 distributed to seven county non-profits. The pilot program focuses on small changes residents can make to create energy savings. Washing with cold water, heating and cooling controls, and installation of LED bulbs are three examples. Participating residents recorded weekly energy-saving practices for two eight-week rounds in 2021.
“In the end, the goal of energy awareness was achieved through the active participation by seven area groups,” Bayfield County Administrator, Mark Abeles-Allison recently said. He also thanked both the Public Service Commission, Focus on Energy, and Focus on Energy Team Leader Brady Steigauf for their extra efforts for rolling out a pilot program during a pandemic.
Steigauf spent time navigating farmers markets in Ashland, Washburn, Bayfield, and Cornucopia plus special events in Iron River and Cable. A preliminary energy analysis showed the 91 participants had a noticeable energy reduction compared to nonparticipants.
Award winners included: Mt. Ashwabay Education Foundation, Recreation and Fitness Resources, the Cable Namakagon Library, Cheq Bay Renewables, Across the Pond Veterans Park, Bayfield Heritage Association and Northern Lights Services. They were honored at the recent Polar Bear Plunge.
