The Osseo-Fairchild School District recently completed two major energy upgrades with support from Focus on Energy. In October 2024, the District replaced the middle/high school's aging chiller with a high-efficiency model. By December 2024, all outdoor lights, including parking lot fixtures, were upgraded to energy-saving LED lights. These projects earned the district $26,994.20 in energy efficiency incentives, saving taxpayers even more money
"These upgrades are a game-changer for our schools," said Superintendent Lori Whelan of the Osseo-Fairchild School District. "The new chiller operates more quietly and efficiently, maintaining a cooler and more comfortable classroom environment. Meanwhile, the brighter LED lighting has enhanced safety in parking lots and crosswalks, particularly during evening events. As a small, rural district with limited funding, every dollar we save on energy costs allows us to invest more in our students and facilities. It's a win for our schools, community, and taxpayers."
The district is already seeing lower energy bills. At the middle/high school, monthly energy costs dropped by over $3,300 in August 2024. The elementary school also reported savings of $1,145 in August. These savings are reinvested in maintenance and facility advancements, creating further value for the district.
"The Osseo-Fairchild School District has done an excellent job prioritizing energy efficiency in its facilities," said David Voss, Energy Advisor with Focus on Energy. "By upgrading to a high-efficiency chiller and LED lighting, they're reducing energy costs and creating safer and more comfortable spaces for students and staff. It's inspiring to see a district take such a proactive approach to energy management while ensuring every project has a lasting positive impact on their community."
Osseo-Fairchild has been committed to energy-saving initiatives since 2005, with a history of projects such as energy audits, lighting upgrades, and HVAC improvements. Recent milestones include participating in the Renew Our Schools Challenge and completing the Osseo-Fairchild Technical Education Center.
