Lourdes Academy Earns Second Win in Statewide Energy Competition
Energy Conservation Leadership

Two Times is a Charm for OshKosh Elementary School

Lourdes Academy Elementary School of Oshkosh has once again demonstrated its leadership in energy conservation, taking first place in the Fall 2024 Renew Our Schools competition. This five-week initiative, sponsored by FOCUS ON ENERGY® and the Wisconsin K-12 Energy Education Program (KEEP), challenges schools to reduce energy use through student-led efforts, hands-on learning, and real-time energy tracking.

Lourdes Academy saved 1,608 kWh (9.67% reduction) earning 590 points and the $2,500 grand prize. The school’s first place standing follows its previous win in Spring 2023, strengthening its commitment to sustainability and student leadership.

“This competition has become a cornerstone of our school’s energy-saving culture,” said Becky Piechowski, Third Grade Teacher. “Our students have shown incredible creativity, teamwork, and dedication. Seeing their excitement and leadership grow over the years has been inspiring.”

Leading by Example

  • Building on Success: This year’s third-grade leaders first participated in the program as first graders in 2023. Their enthusiasm about the competition inspired the entire school to adopt new behaviors.
  • Identifying Energy-Saving Practices: Students identified peak energy-saving opportunities, including shutting off devices and lights during weekly Mass. This simple action reduced energy use by up to 30%.
  • Engaging the School Community: Through announcements, projects, and presentations, students raised awareness and encouraged participation across all grade levels, transforming the competition into a school-wide effort.
  • Focusing on Real-Time Results: Using the eGauge tool, students tracked energy use and celebrated their progress, demonstrating the power of small actions to drive meaningful change.

“Initiatives like Renew Our Schools give students the tools and confidence to make a real impact,” said Heather Feigum, Program Manager at Focus on Energy. “By learning to track energy use and implement changes, they are not just saving energy—they are gaining skills and knowledge to benefit their schools, communities, and futures.”

Statewide Impact

While the competition recognized Lourdes Academy as the winner, every participating school contributed to building a brighter, more sustainable future through firsthand energy education.

Other schools participating in the Fall 2024 competition also achieved notable results:

  • Forest Edge Elementary School: 2,060 kWh saved (23.39% reduction), 345 points.
  • Malcolm Shabazz City High School: 838 kWh saved (9.63% reduction), 305 points.
  • Evansville High School: 228 kWh saved (0.76% reduction), 270 points.
