Course Description: (9 seats remaining) FOCUS ON ENERGY® is partnering with MREA to provide a Photovoltaic Training Series package of four MREA courses (PV 101, 201, 202 & 304) that allows participants to work through materials in preparation for the NABCEP PV Associate exam, or any entry-level PV training, in a self-paced online format.

The online courses (PV 101, 201 and 202) combined with about 32 hours of training, with textbooks; additionally, a hands-on lab day is included with this training series. Students can work through recorded presentations and exercises at their own pace. Once the coursework is finished within the 30-30-60-day time limits and all assignments receive a passing grade, a completion certificate is issued for each course. Students must complete all three classes to be eligible to attend the hands-on, in-person, PV 304 course.

Basic Photovoltaics - PV 101 (30 days to complete)
This eight-hour course addresses the basics of solar electricity.

PV Site Assessment - PV 201 (30 days to complete)
This eight-hour course uses presentations, exercises, activities, and classroom discussion to demonstrate how to perform a residential PV site assessment, using a template created by the MREA.

PV System Design - PV 202 (60 days to complete)
This 16-hour course teaches the step-by-step process of designing a PV system. and energy production.

PV Labs and Design Scenarios - PV 304 (8-hour in-person lab)
This eight-hour in-person course demonstrates PV system design principles and proper installation practices through the construction of two PV systems using a portable lab assembled at ground level (no climbing required). Registration open to ten (10) students in each location.

Cost: $350 per participant. Total cost for this training opportunity is $788 however, through scholarships offered by Focus on the Energy, the price difference is subsidized.

Approved for Continuing Education by WI DSPS
These three courses are approved by the Wisconsin Department of Safety & Professional Services (DSPS) for the following licenses and (total) credit hours:

  • 31.5 Commercial Electrical Inspector
  • 27 Dwelling Contractor Qualifier
  • 31.5 Journeyman Electrician (including Industrial & Residential)
  • 31.5 Master Electrician (including Residential)
  • 31.5 Registered Electrician
  • 31.5 UDC-Electrical Inspector

NABCEP PV Associate Credentials:
To earn your NABCEP PV Associate Credential, students have to successfully complete the 32 hours of online coursework and pass the NABCEP PV Associate Exam. Students will register for the exam through the MREA as their NABCEP Approved Registered Training Provider. The cost of the exam is not included in the cost of this course ($150).

During registration for the online courses, sign up to participate in the one-day lab location that is convenient for you. Students must successfully complete all three online sessions to be eligible to attend the hands-on lab day and to sign up for the NABCEP PV Associate Exam. Please note: should any participant wish to achieve the credentials, all testing and fees are handled through the MREA.
