Tips for Renters

While renters typically have fewer options with making physical changes to their homes to save energy, there are still many ways to save. If you want to lower your energy bill, save energy, and reduce your environmental impact, Focus on Energy has tips for you. Even small behaviors can add up – saving up to 20% when added up.

“When I moved into my new unit, the first thing I did was replace every single light with LED bulbs and order a free energy saving kit from Focus on Energy. Even in 2023, most of the bulbs were still incandescent or the curly CFLs before I switched them. With this change alone I’m saving about 504 watts – about as much as a small window AC unit – of electricity. I do other behaviors too to save energy and noticed that according to my utility, my energy bill is half that of my neighbors in identical units.

3. Reduce Standby Power Consumption

Standby power, sometimes called ghost power or phantom power, is the energy used by electronics when they are not turned on or active. Unplug larger power sources such as electronics when they are not in use to prevent unnecessary energy consumption.

4. Update Lighting Around Your Home

We recommend proactively replacing bulbs. The sooner they're replaced, the sooner bills go down. Throwing away bulbs early is much less wasteful than the energy wasted to power inefficient bulbs. Also, be sure to turn off lights that are not in use.

5. Upgrade to a Smart Thermostat

A smart thermostat can save you energy by learning your household’s patterns and automatically adjusting your home’s temperature settings throughout the day. Plus, you may also be eligible for additional savings of up to $50 on select thermostats.
