Make 10 Small Changes at Home for Big Energy Savings

Earth Month is a great reminder of how small actions you take at home can make a difference for the planet and how much you spend monthly on energy. New habits can lead to lifelong energy savings, and most are easy!

Here are 10 simple, yet practical ways you can save energy in your home.

What Can You Do?

Easy Habits to Start

  • Switch to LED lightbulbs. LEDs use less energy and last longer than traditional bulbs, helping lower your energy bills over time. Be sure to recycle CFL bulbs properly.
  • Turn off lights you’re not using. If one light does the job, turn off the rest.
  • Order your Free Energy-Saving Product Pack. Get a box of energy-saving products delivered straight to your doorstep—for free!
  • Unplug equipment when not in use. Many devices use energy when turned off. Either unplug them or use an advanced power strip to easily turn everything off at once.
  • Set your thermostat wisely. Aim for 78°F in summer and 68°F or lower in winter to save energy and stay comfortable.

  • Use sunlight to your advantage. Open curtains on south-facing windows during the day to warm your home naturally. Close curtains at night to reduce the chill you may feel from cold windows.
  • Take the Focus on Energy online home energy assessment. Answer a few quick questions about your home and get a custom report with tips to help you save energy and improve comfort.
  • Upgrade your home’s insulation. Insulation helps keep warm air inside during winter and outside during summer. It can help increase home comfort and block noise.
  • Use ceiling fans. Run fans counterclockwise in summer for a cooling breeze and reverse them in winter to help circulate warm air. It’s an easy way to ease the load on your heating and cooling system. Remember to turn the fan off if there is no one in the room.
  • Wash clothes in cold water whenever you can. Most of the energy used by your washer goes to heating water, so switching to cold water can lower energy use and still get your clothes clean.
