Discover the advantages of being a Small Business Trade Ally

Small Business Program Trade Allies conduct short walk-throughs of customer facilities to identify opportunities for energy efficiency. The customer then has the option to implement efficiency measures, choosing from three energy-saving packages and an a la carte list. Trade Allies are reimbursed and compensated up to $7,500 in incentives per project by Focus on Energy.

Businesses usually served by the Small Business Program have an average peak monthly electricity demand of less than 100 kW and cover a range of sectors including, but not limited to:

  • Agricultural producers
  • Churches
  • Day Care Centers
  • Farms
  • Independent Gas Stations
  • Independent Retailers
  • Non-Profit Organizations
  • Non-Public Schools
  • Restaurants
  • Small Hotels/Motels
  • Small Industries
  • Small Laundromats
  • Small Offices
  • Strip Mall Tenants

In order to become a Small Business Trade Ally, you must fulfill both the Focus on Energy Trade Ally requirements and the program-specific requirements.

    Complete and submit the Trade Ally Application and a W-9 form. Be sure to indicate your interest in the Small Business Program.

    Once you are approved, you will be contacted and asked to provide a few pieces of additional information including a small business application, your State of Wisconsin electrical contractor license and proof of liability insurance coverage.

    Once this paperwork is received and approved, you will receive your welcome packet. If additional information is needed, we will contact you for clarification.

Available Trade Ally Energy-Saving Options


Starting at $199

  1. Receive a free lighting and refrigeration assessment
  2. Review the assessment and receive higher incentives on up to 30 LED lamps installed
  3. Choose additional energy savings opportunities based on the assessment
  4. Benefit from the savings once the Trade Ally completes installation 

Small Business Trade Ally Requirements



To participate in the Small Business Program, contractors must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a Focus on Energy Trade Ally
  • Be a State of Wisconsin licensed electrical contractor (proof of license required)
  • Submit proof of liability insurance coverage

Required Training

Training is required to become a Small Business Program Trade Ally. The training is free, is provided by Focus on Energy, and covers the following topics:

  • Program goals and objectives
  • Program delivery approach
  • Use of a digital energy survey tool
  • Proper invoicing and reporting procedures
  • Customer service
