ENERGY STAR® Benchmarking & Certification

WHY BENCHMARKING AND CERTIFICATION ARE IMPORTANT TO YOUR BUILDING

Buildings that go through the ENERGY STAR® benchmarking and certification process can save owners a lot of money through reduced energy costs. Benchmarking, when done consistently, can reduce energy use up to seven percent. Certification provides even higher energy savings. Certified office buildings use 35% less energy, cost $0.54 less per square foot to operate and have higher rental and occupancy rates.

Energy Benchmarking with the ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager

Benchmarking is the ongoing review of building energy performance to determine if a building is getting better or worse in comparison to itself and other buildings.   Doing so provides a starting point to measure the value of upgrades and behavioral modification to increase operational efficiency.  It also provides building owners with:

  • Energy usage trends and building rankings within a portfolio
  • Financial justification to plan capital equipment improvements
  • Determination if behavioral measures are working

Use the 1 – 100 ENERGY STAR score to benchmark against peers - available for more than 25 different types of facilities.

When you get an ENERGY STAR score for your building or plant, it indicates how it’s performing against peer facilities nationwide. For example, a score of 50 is typical, while a 30 means it’s only more efficient than 30 percent of peer facilities. A score of 75 or higher means your facility is a top performer — and eligible for ENERGY STAR certification!
